The legislation on permissible CO2 emissions for passenger cars sets binding requirements. In the European Union, the regulation permits a fleet average value of 130 grams of CO2 per kilometre until 2015 and 95 grams until 2020. This corresponds to a fuel consumption of 5.6 litres and 4.9 litres per kilometre respectively. The importance of developing low-emission vehicles for automotive manufacturers thus becomes apparent.
