This book casts an entirely new light on the current debate about the art of film in Africa and its translation into German. The fundamental aim of the study is to determine, on the basis of the feature films Touki Bouki (1973), Hyènes (1992) and their subtitled versions (2006), whether and to what extent the message of a classic film of African cinematography can be transferred into the German target-culture context by means of subtitling, in order to enable and promote intercultural exchange between Africa and the German-speaking world. In addition to outlining current theories of subtitling and film language and presenting Djibril Diop Mambéty’s unique cinematic oeuvre, the study engages intensively and in detail with both the linguistic-aesthetic and culture-specific elements of the source dialogues and the “legibility” of the culturally conditioned visual language.
