1,3-butadiene is a base chemical of polymer chemistry that has so far been indispensable and is mainly used for the synthesis of synthetic rubber. Approximately 95 % of the 1,3-butadiene required worldwide is obtained as a by-product of the steam cracking of naphtha.
Due to the increasing production of shale gas in the United States, the steam crackers there are being converted so that ethane can be used as feed. This significantly reduces the yield of 1,3-butadiene, which may lead to worldwide shortages in the supply of 1,3-butadiene. To prevent this, alternative production routes are necessary.
