The objective description of tyre characteristics under appropriate conditions is essential for the development of full-vehicle attributes. The novel tyre characterisation process described here is based on a defined set of objective full-vehicle parameters, which are identified by means of dedicated driving manoeuvres. The core of the hybrid method lies in the expedient classification of tyre characteristics into structural and frictional quantities. Based on the kinematic deformation mechanisms in the tyre contact patch and in the tyre construction, analytical formulations for essential tyre characteristics are derived. The combination of new test methods on flat-track and trailer test rigs subsequently allows their precise identification. In order to merge the independently measured properties, an analytical synthesis model is described which enables the parameter identification of empirical tyre models. The tyre properties identified in this way are validated at the full-vehicle level. This confirms the substantial improvement of vehicle dynamics simulation in both the linear and the limit range compared with the previous state of the art.
