This work describes a methodology for evaluating the noise characteristics of disc brakes based on the experimental determination of modal properties. A simplified model is used for the fundamental investigation of nonlinear friction-excited systems. Using an experimental approach, the modal properties of the brake system are determined during operation. The measurement concept incorporates an innovative approach to system excitation by means of a force-controlled piezoelectric actuator as well as an approach for capturing the system response for all relevant vibration modes. Applying the method to the investigation of different brake variants demonstrates the potential to reduce the effort required for time-consuming and costly test bench and vehicle tests in early development phases.
