The service production process in full truckload transport is still characterised by a significant lack of productivity of the production resources employed. Within the production methods that prevail to this day among the mostly small and medium-sized provider companies, the greatest driver of this situation is the widespread fixed assignment of drivers to vehicles and the thus unavoidable coupling of driver working time and vehicle utilisation time.
Building on the findings of an extensive problem analysis and on the development and evaluation of various courses of action for maximising the utilisation of the resources employed in truckload transport, this work first provides fundamental quantitative evidence that the production of truckload transport services within inter-company cooperations in an appropriately managed transport network offers the possibility of significantly improving above all the temporal utilisation of the production resources – under favourable circumstances even of doubling it.
The results of this research work thereby make it possible, for the first time, also for small and medium-sized truckload transport providers to dissolve the hitherto seemingly insurmountable driver–vehicle tie and thus to decouple the vehicle’s utilisation time from the possible working time of a driver. Starting from already known planning problems in less-than-truckload networks, this work designs a freight transport network for full truckload traffic and describes the correspondingly necessary tactical and operational planning issues. Finally, various traffic procedures are developed for managing the full truckload network, and their functional viability and economic impact are examined on the basis of various test scenarios.
