The focus of this work was the development and synthesis of new fluorescent compounds for the investigation of physiological processes. Novel fluorescent calcium sensors were synthesised and their application presented. The innovation of these calcium sensors consisted in the integration of an azide linker, which allows the sensors to be conjugated to further biomolecules via the Cu(I)-catalysed HUISGEN reaction. In total, four calcium sensors were successfully synthesised, differing in their absorption and emission wavelengths and in the position of the azide linker. The four new calcium sensors were investigated by Ca2+-dependent fluorescence spectroscopy. It was shown that in the absence of Ca2+ ions no emission was observed, whereas with increasing Ca2+ concentration an increase in emission intensity could be measured. In a first application, the calcium sensors were successfully linked to polyethylene glycol (PEG).
