Screenography introduces an approach to the development and design of website layouts that places users’ needs at the centre, while taking into account existing presentation possibilities as well as cultural and individual preferences. The aim is to develop the foundations and the technology for an adaptive, content- and usage-driven generic layout. Screenography addresses the necessary dynamic requirements and users’ expectations regarding design by drawing on insights from dramaturgy and scenography, taking into consideration the particular requirements but also the possibilities of WIS (web information systems). Adapting grids for WIS helps to partition the presentation area of web applications appropriately and flexibly in order to facilitate the placement and allocation of content. Furthermore, by detaching from the implementation level, patterns make it possible to better address recurring, similar design requirements. In this way, Screenography combines techniques for the design and staging of spaces of action with techniques of HCI design (human-computer interface design).
