Liquid crystal cells can be used in glass building envelopes to regulate the incidence of light. Their basic feasibility had already been demonstrated in a previous study. The present work investigated whether more cost-effective processes than those used in the production of conventional liquid crystal cells for displays can be employed for manufacturing such cells on an industrial scale. It was shown that low-cost AZO can replace the commonly used ITO as electrode material in liquid crystal cells. As an alternative to applying polarising films with poor weathering resistance, the slot die coating process was adapted for the reproducible production of internal thin-film polarisers made of lyotropic liquid crystal. By means of mechanical post-treatment, the thin-film polariser can simultaneously serve as an alignment layer. Applying theoretical stability criteria to the coatings obtained demonstrated that the minimum layer thicknesses had been achieved. The thin-film polariser enabled the production of functional, long-term stable liquid crystal cells. These results are complemented by investigations into filling processes for large-area liquid crystal cells.
