In this biography, published on the occasion of his 200th birthday, the reader becomes acquainted not only with the scientific but also with the human side of August Wilhelm Hofmann. His numerous letters make it possible to gain a deep insight into the world of a scientist in the 19th century, both in London and in Berlin. Of particular interest is his closeness to the royal houses, be it Queen Victoria in England and later Emperor Wilhelm I and especially Victoria of Prussia, “Vicky”. Astonishing, too, are Hofmann’s journeys, very extensive for the time, with the many experiences they brought, taking him to Egypt and also to North America.

To the scientific community, Hofmann is known among other things for the synthesis of aniline dyes such as rosaniline and “Hofmann’s violet”, but also as founding president of the Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft.
