The production of C/C-SiC materials by means of liquid silicon infiltration and thermoplastic carbon precursors is investigated. Starting from commercial thermoplastic polymers, a multi-stage selection procedure identified two plastics — the polyetherimide PEI Ultem1000 from Sabic and the polyetheretherketone KT880FP from Solvay — as suitable precursors for the production of fabric-reinforced C/C-SiC in a hot pressing process. Through a thermal fibre pretreatment in a nitrogen atmosphere, the fibre-matrix interaction can be adjusted for both polymers by the continuous removal of the functional oxygen groups on the fibre surface. The result is improved mechanical properties in the C/C-SiC state, with a 4-point bending strength of > 220 MPa being achieved with the PEEK KT880FP precursor at a fibre pretreatment temperature of 700–800 °C. A further increase in the fibre pretreatment temperature leads to increasing fibre-matrix debonding during pyrolysis. This enhances SiC formation during liquid silicon infiltration.
