The virtual driver’s workplace model is an immersive VR tool for the ergonomic design of a vehicle interior. It combines a visual simulation with distinct haptic feedback in the form of a variable driver’s workplace model. In addition to replacing real physical models, the virtual driver’s workplace model extends the scope of investigation offered by conventional CAD methods. This thesis deals with the setup, evaluation and further development of the virtual driver’s workplace model. The central requirements for the design of such a mixed reality system are derived; these result on the one hand from the field of application in the ergonomic design and analysis of a vehicle interior, and on the other hand are grounded in human perception. In the evaluation of the virtual driver’s workplace model, several experimental studies show that the user’s seating position and driving posture in the simulation environment correspond to those in a real vehicle, and also that a digital representation of the user in the virtual environment significantly reduces the perceptual distortions caused by the visualisation with regard to the size of the displayed content. Furthermore, it is demonstrated experimentally that distinct haptic feedback is necessary for ergonomic investigations of the reachability and operability of controls within the vehicle interior. These findings confirm the approach of the presented mixed reality system. In addition, the methodology of percentile simulation is presented. The aim of this novel simulation methodology is to place the user in the perspective of any given body percentile and to let them experience a virtual vehicle interior from exactly this perspective. In virtual environments it is possible, using visual and haptic stimuli, to place the user in a virtual body that they perceive and accept as their own. The percentile simulation approach makes use of the technical possibilities offered by the virtual driver’s workplace model in the form of visual and haptic simulation as well as by the digital human model employed.
