The increasing challenges of maintaining clean air with respect to micron and submicron particles are leading to intensified efforts in soot separation in passenger cars. These goals can be achieved by means of modified electrostatic precipitators. The development of such precipitators requires simulation tools capable of representing particle motion in electro-fluid-dynamic flows for these applications.

In the present work, the process of particle motion in electro-fluid-dynamic (electrohydrodynamic) fields is analysed. For the simulation of the electric field, a modelling approach is therefore chosen which permits a solution of the space-charge-laden electric field even in the range of higher temperatures. These simulations are confirmed by experiments. The work further demonstrates that accurate modelling of turbulent dispersion is necessary in the simulation of particle motion in near-wall regions in order to be able to represent particle deposition correctly. The implementation applied within this work yields very good results. The presented development of a more advanced model for the control and regulation of two-way coupling aims to enable this efficiently for practical applications as well.
