High workload (including long working hours, time pressure) and intensive interactive work (including high numbers of patients, emotional dissonance) are central work-related stress constellations for hospital physicians. The question of how these stress factors interact with regard to the emergence of emotional exhaustion among hospital physicians has not yet been investigated. In the present study, a work-related explanatory model of emotional exhaustion among hospital physicians is derived from theoretical findings and tested empirically. The responses of the physicians surveyed largely confirm the model. Nevertheless, significant discrepancies emerge between the physicians’ perspective and fundamental findings in work science. The results are discussed with regard to the research methods applied as well as implications for research and practice.
