In modern gas turbine combustors with swirl-stabilised premix burners, self-excited combustion oscillations can occur. In addition to the acoustics of the gas turbine, dynamic processes in the flow and in the chemical reaction play a role. Because of the complexity of these physical interrelations, experimental investigations remain indispensable.

In this work it is shown that a test rig with a wide parameter range – with respect to the flow and the combustion – exhibits thermoacoustically oscillating operating points. Some flow- and combustion-dynamic properties of the burner and combustor flow are determined experimentally.

Two methods are employed to influence or suppress the combustion oscillations: 1. By changing the resonance frequency of the combustor, the acoustics of the combustor are altered such that the test rig no longer oscillates; 2. A servo valve modulates the fuel mass flow in such a way that the combustion oscillation is thereby influenced. It is shown that both methods can be applied over the entire parameter range of the test rig.
