Polymer brushes of polystyrene, poly(n-butyl acrylate) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) were synthesised on silicon surfaces in a “grafting from” process. For this purpose, the nitroxide-mediated polymerisation technique was employed, which affords low polydispersities and high molecular weights. Subsequently, the brushes on the surface were patterned on the nanometre scale using the very fine tip of an atomic force microscope. By varying the polarity of different dyes, individual regions – either the scratched-off areas or the polymer brush areas – could be addressed selectively. In this way it was also possible to immobilise phospholipids and proteins next to one another in a controlled manner on the nanometre scale. By means of dip pen nanolithography, a further functionalisation of the polymer surfaces was achieved.
Saskia Miele studied chemistry (Diplom) at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster from 2000 to 2005 and completed her diploma thesis at the Institute of Biochemistry under Prof. Wegener. During her studies she undertook short research stays at the University of Granada, Spain, and the Centro de Investigación Biomédica Occidente, Mexico. After her studies, Saskia Miele completed internships at Sanofi-Aventis, Frankfurt, and at the CRC for Cochlear Implant and Hearing Aid Innovation, Australia. From 2006 to 2009 she carried out her doctoral research under Prof. Studer at the Organisch-Chemisches Institut of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Her studies and her doctoral research were supported by the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes.
