Imaginative Social Therapy was developed out of counselling work in social pedagogy (the field of “Social Therapy”). Clients who are difficult to counsel or treat—owing, among other things, to mental illness, diminished capacity for insight, or verbal or emotional blockages—are given the opportunity, with the aid of imagination, to perceive their situation in a new way through many senses. In the imagination of life phases or of a particular period in the client’s life, past, present and the imaginary planning of the future all come together, become experienceable within a new framework through many senses, and can accordingly be reordered not only emotionally. The imagination remains vividly present in the clients’ memory for a long time, can be used for further counselling work or therapy, and, after the sessions have been concluded, serves the clients in everyday life as a helpful memory for the purpose of lasting consolidation or further change.
