The question repeatedly arises as to what economic value the financial services sector actually generates for a national economy, as well as which factors – be they of a macroeconomic or microeconomic nature – influence this value, and to what extent.
In this book, Alessia Ortner focuses on how the overall performance of the financial services industry can be measured by means of value added. Using various value-added indicators, the banking and insurance industries of Switzerland are compared with those of other European countries.
In addition to the international comparison, the study is devoted in particular to an analysis of the Swiss banking and insurance groups in relation to one another. Furthermore, in order to explain the economic development of these two industries, Alessia Ortner seeks to identify the most important influencing factors – of both a microeconomic and macroeconomic nature – by means of statistical analyses.
