Owing to rapid social change, teachers must constantly adapt anew to altered conditions in everyday school life. Parents are providing less and less in the way of upbringing, so that, in addition to their actual duties, teachers are increasingly confronted with problematic educational tasks.
In recent years, a progressive loss of authority on the part of schools has also become observable.
Increasingly, the lack of practical relevance in university-based teacher training is being criticised.
Trainee teachers often do not know how to behave in critical classroom situations, and even teachers who have been in the profession for years have problems dealing with socially deviant pupil behaviour.
Training procedures for strengthening teachers’ social competence offer appropriate support.
The observable outcomes for teachers who have worked with the “Konstanzer Trainingsmodell (KTM)-kompakt” at the University of Bayreuth are:

a greater degree of self-assurance and greater satisfaction with regard to their own handling of classroom conflicts

the availability of strategies for analysing and, where necessary, changing aggressive or disruptive pupil behaviour and their own reactions to it

exchange with a partner in a friendly and objective atmosphere

the existence of a nucleus of team orientation within the teaching staff through tandems, and

release from the role of the individual teacher as a lone fighter, and an opening up to the outside.
