This theoretical study examines user satisfaction in higher-density housing. Since the widespread desire among the population for a single-family house in green surroundings stands in clear contradiction to the demand for curbing land consumption, architecture must find ways of making space- and resource-efficient alternatives to the single-family house more attractive. Unfortunately, only in very few cases are buildings examined after their completion to determine whether the architects’ housing concepts function as planned. This study therefore constitutes a contribution to the investigation of higher-density forms of housing with regard to their congruence with user needs and thus to their future viability.

An evaluation carried out by the author on five buildings that had received architecture awards showed that the user perspective is still strongly neglected in architects’ planning. In many cases, the usability of the buildings suffers drastically from the strong emphasis architects place on the external design. This study highlights the surveying of users as a valuable source for the assessment of buildings. Accordingly, the direct or indirect involvement of users in the planning process can open up to planners the perspective of the users, which is as much a part of the quality of architecture as questions of aesthetic design.
