This dissertation investigates the development and application of radar-based sensor concepts to improve passenger safety in motor vehicles. The research focuses on contactless measurement techniques for detecting occupant positions, movements, and physiological parameters such as heartbeat and respiration. Radar systems operating at frequencies of 2.45 GHz and 24 GHz are examined in particular. Analytical and numerical calculations are used to investigate electromagnetic wave propagation, reflections from the human body, and suitable antenna positions within the vehicle interior. A major emphasis is placed on developing radar sensors for heartbeat detection and distance measurement. Various antenna configurations, signal processing techniques, and evaluation methods are investigated. Potential applications include occupant classification, driver state monitoring, and adaptive airbag control. The developed sensor systems are experimentally tested and evaluated regarding their measurement characteristics. The study contributes to the understanding and integration of radar-based sensing technologies into automotive safety and monitoring systems.
