Political theory has so far shown little interest in Friedrich Schiller – and for good reason? Or is it precisely Schiller’s aesthetic philosophy that provides a framework in which we can conceive of the political anew? Examining 27 theoretical writings, this study is the first attempt to open up Schiller’s philosophy comprehensively for political theory. The findings offer points of reference to other political thinkers – for instance to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Ralf Dahrendorf (and other thinkers of the ‘liberal civil society’), Carl Schmitt and Herbert Marcuse.

This is a dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Potsdam and awarded the grade “magna cum laude”. It was praised for presenting even complex matters clearly and in a highly readable manner. A potential standard text for political science, it is at the same time, owing to its independent approach, of interest to literary studies and philosophy.
