Lap time is regarded as the decisive criterion for technical development in motor racing. A computational prediction of the minimum lap time supports decisions in the early phase of the development process. Calculating the time-minimal racing line and vehicle speed is numerically demanding due to the coupling between racing line, speed and maximum vehicle acceleration potential as well as the nonlinear dynamics of the vehicle model, and it converges to local optima.
This book presents an approach for calculating the time-minimal velocity trajectory efficiently and robustly by extending the so-called quasi-steady-state simulation method with an approach for assessing transient vehicle behaviour.
