A further decline in voluntary engagement poses a major challenge for many sports clubs and may even threaten the existence of some.

The aim of this book is therefore to provide those in leadership positions in sports clubs with a practical guide. It consists of a combination of findings from academic studies and the fields of action derived from them, together with ideas and practical examples for promoting voluntary engagement.

Particular emphasis is placed on the needs and expectations of committed staff and on incentives which, in the form of general and working conditions, must be designed to be attractive enough to recruit people for voluntary work in sports clubs and retain them over the longer term. Shaping and positively influencing these factors can be supported by successful management. VfL Herrenberg, a sports club that has been actively engaged in volunteer management for two years, is presented as a model club for the practical implementation of the process of “promoting voluntary engagement”.
