Prognos and INFA carried out a demand analysis for Class I (DK I) landfills on behalf of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, taking into account the volumes of mineral materials that are disposed of (recovered and eliminated) at landfills or recovered outside landfills and which, as a result of changing (legal) framework conditions, may in future have to be disposed of at landfills. The quantities of these mineral materials were projected in various scenarios that take account of both economic framework conditions and legal and technical developments. The effects on future landfill capacity requirements were examined. A key finding was that the existing DK I landfill capacities in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, will already be filled within 5 years. And even if all known plans were implemented, the remaining capacity would only be extended to approximately 13 years.
