The glare-free LED high beam (Matrix Beam) is based on an LED headlamp and camera sensor technology. The headlamp’s light distribution is divided into light segments illuminated by individually controllable LEDs. The camera system detects other road users, whereupon only those LEDs that could cause glare are switched off. The remaining light is retained for the driver, thus enabling optimal visibility without glare. In the present work, the glare-free LED high beam is implemented in a vehicle.
On the basis of a traffic space analysis and modelling, approaches to high beam segmentation are developed and the question is clarified as to what influence the number of LEDs has on the degree of utilisation. In psychophysiological subject studies, the effect of the system is evaluated and the potential safety gain is derived on the basis of the detection distance.
