The cultivation of various organisms in photobioreactors has recently attracted increasing research attention, since light can play a role in many metabolic processes. Moreover, many phototrophic organisms have not yet been investigated as thoroughly, owing to their more demanding cultivation. Therefore, two different phototrophic culture systems were examined and optimised with regard to the production of biotechnologically valuable compounds.
On the one hand, using the example of the production of pharmaceutically interesting representatives of the triterpene group from Salvia officinalis, the effect of light on the synthesis of the triterpene acids oleanolic and ursolic acid was investigated.
On the other hand, a new emersed photobioreactor was developed, which makes it possible to cultivate terrestrial organisms under near-natural conditions and to exploit their broad spectrum of biologically active substances, or to control their production in a targeted manner. This is demonstrated using terrestrial cyanobacteria, which have so far played hardly any role in the production of biotechnologically valuable compounds.
