Common factors play an important role in psychotherapy. Grawe in particular made a strong impact with his concept of common factors, which has since become a standard. His principles of change help to better assess the approach taken in a counselling process and to make the strengths and weaknesses of different schools of counselling visible at a glance. In this way, one’s own approach can be quickly reviewed in order to address weak points in a targeted manner and to supplement them, thus exploiting the full potential of therapeutic possibilities.

The aim of the present work is to make Grawe’s common factors fruitful for Christian counselling in models of pastoral care, coaching and mentoring. To achieve this, the possible difficulties of applying them in a Christian counselling setting are first discussed, before an application is presented on the basis of three examples.
