This work investigates how the photoemission behaviour of plasmonic excitations in metals is influenced by the organic semiconductor aluminium tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) (Alq3), and examines possible underlying interaction mechanisms. The interaction between light and matter is determined by the complex dielectric functions of the materials involved. While the dielectric function of Alq3 is real at 800 nm, it is complex at 400 nm, i.e. it exhibits a finite imaginary part, which causes part of the exciting electromagnetic field to be absorbed. On the basis of these optical properties, plasmons excited in metals and their modification by Alq3 at different energies are investigated using a photoemission electron microscope (PEEM). These investigations provide the basis for the manipulation and future control of plasmonic signal transport on the nanometre scale.
