Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) represent a novel detector technology that makes it possible to amplify single photons into a detectable electrical charge pulse by means of Geiger multiplication. The continuous further development of SiPMs allows new applications to be opened up in high-energy physics, nuclear medicine, optical measurement technology and many other fields in which fast, compact and highly sensitive optical detectors are required.
