This work makes a substantial contribution to a better understanding of the phenomenology of condensation-induced water hammer. Its primary objective is to present an experimentally supported model concept that captures the inflow behaviour of subcooled liquid into a steam-filled pipeline and describes the subsequent steam bubble implosion. Building on the development of a methodology for experimental investigation, the formation and propagation of condensation-induced water hammer are analysed. A phenomenological model is established that combines the probability of occurrence and the intensity of condensation-induced water hammer within a risk model. On the basis of this new model concept, current avoidance strategies can be refined in crucial respects. In addition, the immediate steam bubble implosion is captured by means of high-resolution optical imaging and translated into a universal model of the interfacial area.
