A systematic approach is presented for the simultaneous development of a test field, the functionally coordinated test rigs within it, and the functional building. The approach employs methodological concepts from the field of systems engineering and demonstrates the systematic procedure of the three development processes using the V-model. Starting with a requirements analysis, methods for analysing the chains of effects in the test field and in the building are presented. Using selected test rigs, the method of model-based development is presented. The test rigs are later intended to be capable of reproducing realistic, complex load conditions. For this purpose, characteristic driving manoeuvres are investigated by means of multibody simulation and mechanical parameters are determined at the respective interfaces to the test specimen. Furthermore, the virtual combination of the test rigs into a functionally coherent test field as well as its integration into a functional building is shown. Methods for foundation design and energy management are developed which, depending on the level of maturity, can be applied in all development phases of the test field. The application of the approach is presented using the example of the Fahrzeugtechnisches Versuchszentrum of the Technische Universität Dresden.
