This study first presents various psychological approaches and pedagogical models for explaining learning and development and explains them in greater theoretical detail. Furthermore, different sociotopes are distinguished and their influence on learning outcomes is analysed. Subsequently, the influence of different variables of the social environment on the general and cognitive development of children aged 3-6 years is examined. Consideration is given to the sociodemographic background, kindergarten attendance, parental goal orientation and the toys available. General development is assessed using the BBK 3-6, cognitive development by means of the HAWIVA-III. Variables relating to kindergarten – such as total duration of kindergarten attendance, daily duration of kindergarten attendance and the pedagogical concept of the kindergarten – are also included. The study shows that variables from all four areas examined have an influence on the general and cognitive development of preschool-age children.
