However, after wounding of transgenic tomato plants overexpressing PS, it became apparent that there must be further wound-inducing signals within prosystemin, since a specific wound induction was also triggered by the mutated form of prosystemin. The data show that the prohormone prosystemin requires processing for signal biogenesis and biological activity. The identification of the phytaspases as the sought-after proteases involved in prosystemin maturation provides a deep insight into the mechanism of wound signal transduction in tomato.
