This monograph reveals the beginnings of the Gothic Novel genre. Its first representatives and their characteristic literary works are presented. Particular attention is paid to its development in Great Britain during the Victorian era in connection with scientific and technical discoveries and changes in public consciousness. Classifications of horror literature and several schools of the Gothic genre are presented and described. Especially prominent here is the figure of the vampire, whose mythological and folk origins are examined. The artistic functions of novelistic time and space in relation to the Gothic architecture typical of the genre form – alongside the characterisation of the Gothic novel’s chronotope – a further focus of the study. The work concludes with the influence of the Gothic novel on the development of European and North American fiction; in this respect, emblematic works are analysed.
