Storytelling – A Narrative Method for Teaching Science Content in Primary School Science and Social Studies Education (Sachunterricht)
Storytelling is a teaching method centred on the aim of building knowledge by conveying learning content in the form of stories. This provides learners with both a cognitive and an affective access to the teaching and learning content.
To date, storytelling has been used above all in foreign language teaching, in order to introduce pupils to unfamiliar vocabulary with the help of stories. However, storytelling can equally be applied in other subjects.
In order to establish storytelling in the field of inanimate nature, a suitable concept for teaching chemical topics in Sachunterricht for third and fourth grades was developed within the framework of the research project. To this end, experiments relevant to everyday life and appropriate to the pupils’ age were embedded in stories, with the narration of the story being limited to the beginning and the end of the lesson, thus forming a frame for the middle section, in which independent experimentation was the focus.
This method was evaluated by means of an intervention study with a parallel class design. The advantages and disadvantages of storytelling in this field of application were determined through an interview study and supplementary video analyses. Among other things, it emerged that the pupils in the storytelling class generally participated in a more concentrated and calmer manner than the pupils in the parallel class.
