Infrastructures such as transport and energy networks form the backbone of our society and economy. In order to continue fulfilling this role in the future, their maintenance in particular must become more efficient. This requires precise knowledge about the current technical condition of the infrastructure components. Although many remote monitoring systems are already in use today, they capture only partial aspects and are operated by different organisations, which is why an overall view has so far been lacking.
This work develops an ontology-based approach for integrated condition monitoring in infrastructure networks: condition-relevant data are modelled uniformly as context information and their semantics are formalised as a description logic ontology. In this process, design patterns support domain experts in creating such ontologies. New methods for reasoning over distributed context information as well as for reasoning with reference to the topology of the infrastructure network then enable the evaluation of the available knowledge. The prototypical deployment in the European rail network on the basis of Semantic Web standards demonstrates the practicability of the developed concepts.
