300 participants from 37 countries met in Hannover from 22 to 24 May 2007 for the 2nd international conference on MBT and automatic waste sorting. The conference, organised by Wasteconsult international, has thus established itself as the most widely noted international conference on mechanical-biological waste treatment (MBT).

Not only in Europe, but also in developing and emerging countries, there is growing interest in MBT, as contributions from India, Thailand and Iran showed. There, in addition to the separation of materials suitable for material and energy recovery, the recovery of compost from mixed municipal solid waste is usually also a treatment objective.

The majority of speakers and conference participants, however, came from Western Europe and Australia. In these countries, a considerable expansion of MBT capacities is to be expected in the coming years. Owing in part to lower requirements (e.g. no 30th BImSchV) and a different orientation of the plants, MBT can be considerably more cost-effective there than in Germany.

The conference did not, however, confine itself to the current state of the plants, but also placed an emphasis on the increased recovery and quality improvement of recoverable material streams through sensor-based sorting processes and improved processing techniques. In the short term, there is a need for improvement here in particular with regard to the high-calorific fractions, so that marketable products can be created.

The main chapters of the conference proceedings are:

I. General and international aspects of MBT
II. Short presentations (of individual process technologies)
III Operating experience and optimisation of MBT
IV. Mechanical treatment and automatic sorting
V. Recovery and marketing (of material streams from MBT)
VI. Biological treatment
VII. Analysis of waste properties
VIII. Emissions and emission treatment
IX. Posters
