In order to enable informative and objective nutrition labelling, the Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) labelling scheme was introduced on food packaging in 2007. The study examines the extent to which GDAs are perceived, understood, used and evaluated by older consumers. For this purpose, a mixed-methods approach (group discussions and written surveys) is applied. The results show moderate levels of awareness, comprehension and use. For parts of the surveyed 50plus generation, GDA labelling causes difficulties in comprehension above all with regard to the reference values and the interpretation of the percentage figures. In light of this, future efforts should aim at information and educational activities as well as at optimising the labelling format (e.g. font size). Information and educational work should focus on imparting basic knowledge in order to improve comprehension and on increasing consumers’ motivation to use the labelling.
