Future driver assistance systems increase the demands placed on the environment perception of automobiles. Modern time-of-flight cameras offer great potential for highly accurate and dense sensory acquisition of the vehicle’s close-range environment. In this work, a concept for 360° close-range perception based on wide-angle time-of-flight cameras is developed. The focus of the work lies, on the one hand, on the system design of the time-of-flight cameras, which enables a previously unattained field of view of 180° per camera and thus, when using four cameras, leads to complete sensory coverage of the vehicle’s environment. On the other hand, novel methods for processing the camera data are presented, ranging from the raw data of the camera through to the three-dimensional modelling of the environment.
