Owing to massive technological changes, many services such as television, postal services and telephony now draw on worldwide telecommunication networks, above all the Internet, as a result of which the number of communication partners and the bandwidth requirements have grown considerably. These changes result in increased complexity of questions such as that of planning such networks. “Design and Scheduling Problems in Planning Optical Networks” investigates questions in this context, with particular attention being paid to the specific problems of fibre-optic networks. The methods mainly used comprise integer programming, decomposition techniques and combinatorial optimization. The planning aspects examined include the planning of the networks themselves, the roll-out scheduling, that is, the question of how the planned networks are realized over a longer period of time, as well as the frequency assignment of the lightpaths once the network is in operation. Both more theoretical aspects, such as the question of facet-defining inequalities of the underlying polytopes, and more practice-oriented aspects, on the basis of concrete implementations and computational experiments, are elucidated.
