Optical spectroscopy on nanoscopic metal structures
This thesis discusses optical spectroscopy on nanoscopic metal structures. Under pulsed near-infrared excitation, these metal structures emit a white-light continuum emission that can be assigned to individual, strongly localized sites of enhanced field strength. Wet-chemically prepared silver nanostructures are used as a model system to investigate the excitation and emission mechanism of the continuum emission. It is shown that in semicontinuous metal films propagating surface plasmon polaritons contribute to the excitation of the continuum emission. On the basis of a characteristic blue shift of the spectrum at increased irradiance, the origin of the continuum emission is attributed to radiative intraband transitions of a hot electron gas.
