Bioactivity analyses were used to investigate whether the antioxidative and/or anticarcinogenic potential can be attributed to the multi-glycosylated glucosinolates present in high concentrations in the leaves of Moringa oleifera Lam., or to their degradation products. First, leaf material of M. oleifera containing sufficient amounts of glucosinolates was produced by targeted cultivation of different ecotypes of M. oleifera in the greenhouse as well as by in vitro culture. The leaves served as the basis for the development of a suitable extraction procedure for these secondary metabolites. Stable glucosinolate standards (total extract as well as individual compounds) were prepared in order to subsequently investigate the potential medicinal efficacy of these substances isolated from M. oleifera. In summary, the analyses carried out showed that the degradation products of the glucosinolates of M. oleifera mediate detoxifying and antioxidative effects, but no genotoxic or mutagenic effects whatsoever, and therefore represent an interesting object for more in-depth bioactivity studies. The results are regarded as an indication of an anticarcinogenic potential of the glucosinolates of M. oleifera.
