As an intermediary in the input and output markets of agriculture, the agricultural trade sector has always performed an important function within the agricultural value chain. In recent years, however, the remaining companies in this sector have come under increasing strategic pressure to adapt – not least as a result of the fundamental structural changes at the upstream and downstream stages. This study therefore examines the strategic risks that agricultural trading companies fundamentally face today, the determinants that shape how these risks are handled, and how the agricultural trade sector responds in (competitive) strategic terms to a changed risk situation. In addition, the question is pursued of how open risk-strategic decision-making can be conceptualised and fostered at the level of the acting individuals.
Comprising five self-contained research contributions, the study not only contributes to a better understanding of the underlying causes of structural change within the agricultural trade sector, but also allows conclusions to be drawn about its further possible development. Moreover, the proposed micro-foundation approach offers a starting point for future research in the field of strategic (risk) management, since it establishes, from a theoretical perspective, a link between the strategic management of the company as a whole and the individual decision-making processes of the acting individuals. Overall, the present work thus has both a basic-research and an applied character.
