Your Template - quality assurance through our layout suggestions

With our template suggestions you can set a layout design for your publication fast and easy

For printing your work we require a digital template in PDF or Post Script File format or a ready-for-print paper copy. Other templates are also available upon request. You can submit the digital copies either on CD-ROM or as an email attachment.

What should I keep in mind in formatting my manuscript?

Below is a short summary of points to consider while formatting your work (for DIN A4 format*):

  • left and right margins should be at least 2 centimeters
  • page numbers should be either centered or placed on the left and right sides of the page. In this case, even page numbers have to be placed on the left side and odd numbers on the right
  • the font size should not be too small, as your template will be scaled from A4 to A5*. We recommend choosing a font size no smaller than 12 pt (except for headers and footers)
  • the text block should be centered
*Naturally, other formats (such as B5) are also acceptable, or you may send us the data of your template in the end format of your wish.

How to format your manuscript correctly

With the help of our format template, you can easily and quickly implement the design of the layout of your publication. We are also happy to take over the formatting of your scientific work for you.

To print your work, we need a digital version from you as a PDF file or Word document. Send us your file easily as an e-mail attachment.

LaTeX template for your scientific paper? Here is some advice for your LaTeX templates:

Guide to the preparation of LaTeX files

LaTeX is a complex system that can be individually adapted to your work. However, the creation of scientific papers in LaTeX often causes inconsistencies in the printed image due to formatting.

As a publishing house, we represent the highest quality standards. To reduce errors, we have therefore created a basic LaTeX template for you. The use of the template makes it easier to identify the source of errors should they occur during printing. Should you develop the template further or decide not to use it, please note the following points for an optimal print image.

1.    General information about formatting:

  • Odd page numbers are always on the right, even page numbers on the left
  • Main chapters always start on the right page
  • Make sure hyphenation is enabled and avoid single lines at the top and bottom of the page.

2.    Font size:

  • Set the font size of the text to at least 12 pt. for A4 documents (excluding footnotes and figure captions, etc.).

➢ This is important so that it does not become too small when scaled to DINA5, the scaling factor from A4 to A5 is about 70%.
  • Set the font size of the text to 8 – 11 pt. for A5 document (excluding footnotes and figure captions, etc.).
  • With LaTeX, explicitly check whether the editor also supports this font size (if it does not, a warning or error will be issued during compilation). If the font size is not supported, try the next larger or smaller one.

3.    Font:

  • Bitmap-fonts create special problems in printing, so we recommend you not to use them.
  • We recommend:

    ➢ Arial
    ➢ Times New Roman
  • From experience, we do not recommend some fonts with serifs (e.g. “CMR” and “LMRoman”), as these lead to uncleanliness in print.
  • If you want to use a serif font, we recommend using e.g. NimbusRoman in a slightly larger font (14 or 15 pt.) so that the fine serifs can be cleanly reproduced in print.

4.    Font color:

  • Make sure that all fonts (including axis labels, etc.) are created 100% black.

➢ Other colors are also possible, but often produce an unclean result in print. Gray in particular makes for an unclean typeface in print.

5.    Graphics/illustrations:

  • Lines must be at least 0.5 pt. wide
  • Font size in figures: at least 10 pt
  • For pixel-based graphics (e.g. photos, scans), please make sure that the resolution is sufficiently high (at least 300dpi).
  • A graphic should occupy at least 50% of the width of the text.
  • Supported image file formats in LaTex are:  PS, EPS, PDF, GIF, JPG, PNG and TIF
  • We recommend that you make printouts of your graphics in different colors. This way you can decide in advance which color tones will look “good”.
  • Problems: When inserting a graphic into the LaTex document, Latex converts the graphic to PDF. If the whole latex file is then converted to PDF, the graphics are converted to PDF again (i.e. PDF to PDF), which leads to significant losses.
➔ For optimal print quality, send us the graphics additionally individually as bitmap files (e.g. png or jpg).

6.    Tables

  • Lines must be at least 0.5 pt. wide
  • Axis labeling and table contents: font size at least 10 pt.

7.    Other:

  • Do not ignore warnings: When compiling*, pay attention to whether there are warnings regarding fonts, font size or graphics.
➢ If there are warnings or errors, then the different packages (e.g. math environment) that are used may not be compatible with each other.
  • To avoid problems when exporting your A4 PDF file to the A5 PDF file later, we recommend that you create or compile the LaTex file directly in A5.
➢ For this purpose, you can additionally pass the parameter a5paper in the document class of your LaTeX file. Please note that the font size must also be scaled accordingly.

After you give us the print approval, it only takes Cuvillier Publishing 3-6 business days to complete your book.
